NOTICE TO USA BUYERS ONLY. The greatest advance in fire fighting came at the beginning of the century when experiments were carried out with self-propelled fire engines. Fire officials were at first reluctant to consider motor driven fire engines, as they had to be absolutely sure of a reliable performance and quick starting, a condition with which few early engines could comply. Like many other early motor manufacturers the Dennis brothers, John & Raymond started their business in 1895 making bicycles in a small shop in the High Street. Perhaps because of the hilly situation of the town they decided in 1898 to motorise their bicycles, fitting them with single-cylinder De Dion-Bouton engines.

Three-and four- wheelers followed and these inevitably led to the production of motor cars in 1900 using engines developed by White and Poppe of Coventry. Thought had also been given to the manufacture of commercials vehicles for specialised purposes and they turned their skills to the production of a fire engine. The first vehicle was built in 1908... Besides manufacturing a comprehensive range of utility and commercial vehicles Dennis are still in the lead with fire-engine production in this country. The 1914 model preserved by them attends rallies throughout the summer as a reminder of their earlier success and the period when the fire engine-its red paint gleaming, brainwork polished and bell clanging, with its crew in dark blue uniforms and brass helmets - was a really enthralling sight.
